Bill Gallagher had a horse named Joe who enjoyed scratching his flank on the family car while he lived in the Waikato in the 1930s. Joe, though, was in for a surprise. As Mr. Gallagher saw the old horse wobble the car, he used his imagination to think of a way to prevent it from happening. He made his vehicle electric.

A trigger device sent a current through the vehicle and eventually to Joe each time the horse shook the automobile as it scratched itself. The ancient Essex wasn’t really a good brainteaser, Joe quickly recognized.

The fact that electricity may be utilized for items other than cars and horses was immediately realized by Bill Gallagher. In 1938, the Gallagher Power Fencing company was founded as a result of his work electrifying fences.
