While Floyd was shackled and laying face-down in the street, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes. J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane, two more police officers, aided Chauvin in restraining Floyd.

Two years down the line, All three were charged with depriving Floyd of his right to liberty knowingly and without due process. According to prosecutors, the former cops were aware that Floyd need medical attention but failed to offer it.

When Thao and Kueng failed to act to stop Chauvin, they were each charged with deliberately depriving Floyd of his right to be free from excessive search and seizure.

The highest penalty for breaching Floyd’s civil rights and causing his death is life in prison, according to the law.

A date for the sentence has not yet been set.
