A queef is an odorless-trapped air pocket that has nothing to do with your diet, Tamika K. Cross, MD, FACOG, a board-certified ob-gyn in Pearland, Texas, explains. Queefs occur when air becomes trapped inside the vaginal canal. Dr. Cross explains that certain movements, such as sex, can then expel the trapped air in a forceful, sometimes audible manner.

A fart, on the other hand, usually has an odor and can be caused by various foods (beans, dairy, etc.) and bacteria breakdown during digestion. And, yes, they come from your butt.
While it’s natural to feel embarrassed when queefs occur during sexual intimacy, keep in mind that everyone with a vagina has them at some point (it’s just physics!). “Queefing can feel embarrassing because it’s rarely discussed,” says Cindy Luquin, founder of Howl at the Womb, a sexual-health website. “During intimacy, our bodies make all kinds of noises, similar to when your stomach growls in a quiet room with other people.” While bodily functions and sounds can be embarrassing and draw unwanted attention, they are a natural part of being human.” So, if it happens, just accept it.
