The National Blue Alert Network upholds the use and the integration of Blue Alert plans throughout the United States in order to quickly spread information to agencies of law enforcement, the media and the public to help bring violent criminals to book.

It was established by a 2010 legislation for law enforcement only.

The Blue Alert also helps to find law enforcement officers who have gone missing. It is also issued when;

  • A police officer has been seriously injured or even killed while on duty.
  • A police officer has gone missing in line with official duties.
  • A police officer has been given the threat to be killed or seriously injured.
  • Lastly, there is information known concerning a crime suspect.

Blue Alerts can be conveyed through television, radio stations, cellphones, wireless devices and even overhead highway message signs and other secondary alerting mechanisms.

From records, there are currently 37 states that use the Blue Alert plans.
