Days of Thanksgiving and special Thanksgiving religious services gained significance in the English tradition during the English Reformation under Henry VIII. It was noted that there were about 52 Sundays and 95 Church Holidays in the period before 1536 when individuals were obligated to skip work in order to attend church.
