Chechnya is a Russian republic. It is located near the Caspian Sea in the North Caucasus region of Eastern Europe. The republic is a part of the North Caucasian Federal District and has land boundaries with Stavropol Krai to the northwest, Georgia to the south, Dagestan, Ingushetia, and North Ossetia-Alania to the east, north, and west, respectively.
The Republic of Ingushetia and the Chechen Republic were formed from the division of the Checheno-Ingush ASSR following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The latter declared an independent Chechen nation called Ichkeria.

Chechnya became the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria after the 1994–1996 First Chechen War with Russia, even though de jure it was still a part of Russia. In the Second Chechen War, which lasted from 1999 to 2009, Russian federal power was reestablished, with Akhmad Kadyrov and later his son Ramzan Kadyrov controlling Chechen politics.
