Chechan, Nana-Checha (“Mother Checha”), and Yokkh Chechen are among these locations (“Greater Chechena”). The word “Chachana,” which refers to a piece of land owned by the Chechen Prince Shikh Murza, first appears in Russian sources as early as the late 16th century. The word Che (“inside”) is attached to the suffix -cha/chan, which together can be translated as “inside territory,” according to the etymology, which is of Nakh origin. The Chechan-are (“Chechen flatlands or plains”), which is located in present-day central Chechnya, has always been the location of the villages and towns bearing the name Chechan.
The Chechens are one of the Nakh peoples who have lived in the North Caucasus highlands since prehistory. Archeological evidence of historical continuity dates back to 3000 B.C., and evidence points to their ancestors migrating from the Fertile Crescent between 10,000 and 8,000 B.C. The debate over their origins is intertwined with the debate over the mysterious origins of the Nakh people as a whole. Chechens, Ingush, and Bats are the only three surviving Nakh peoples, but some scholars believe they are the remnants of a larger family of peoples.
