He was born in Dukki, then a town in what is now Pakistan.
He earned his undergraduate degree and master’s degree in Urdu and English from the University of Delhi, where he also studied.
He received a research fellowship from the Ministry of Education in 1958 and completed his doctorate.
In 1961, he moved to the Delhi University as a reader after spending a year teaching Urdu literature at St. Stephen’s College.
In 1974, he was hired by Jamia Millia Islamia University as a professor.
Gopi relocated to the Delhi University to serve as a tutor, and in 2005, he was given the title of professor emeritus.
In Hindi, Urdu, and English, he has written more than 60 books, making him a skilled novelist.
