Following his time spent playing college football at Rice and SMU, the Colts selected him in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and subsequently signed him to a contract with their franchise. Granson spent his childhood in Austin, Texas, where he graduated from Westlake High School. Although he was born in DeMotte, Indiana, he spent most of his life there.
As a senior, Granson was honoured by being placed on the All-District 14-6A second team. Kylen did not receive a lot of attention from other schools, but he chose to play collegiate football at Rice despite having an offer from Harvard. Granson’s first college team was the Rice Owls, where he played wide receiver. As a freshman, he caught 33 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns.
The next year, as a sophomore, he caught 18 passes for 241 yards. Granson left the team after head coach David Bailiff was fired. Granson first went to Austin Community College with the hope of walking on to the Texas Longhorns. Granson ran into Bailiff by accident on the campus of the University of Texas.
The bailiff didn’t know that Granson had left Rice, so he started contacting college coaches on Granson’s behalf. Granson was told by SMU coach Sonny Dykes that he could play as a walk-on.
