The Gray Man is a 2022 American action-thriller movie that Anthony and Joe Russo will be directing. It is based on Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel of the same name, which Joe Russo co-wrote with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. In addition to Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, the movie also features Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Dhanush, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton. The first movie of a planned series based on John Greaney’s Gray Man novels was made by the Russo brothers’ production firm, AGBO. The main character of the movie is CIA operative Court Gentry, who is fleeing from vicious mercenary Lloyd Hanson after learning dishonest information about his superior.
Greaney’s book was once intended to be adapted, with James Gray slated to helm both a version starring Brad Pitt and one starring Charlize Theron in a gender-flipped role. Neither version, however, ever materialized. Up until July 2020, when it was revealed the Russo brothers would direct and both Gosling and Evans were attached to star, the property stalled in development hell. March 2021 saw the start of filming in Los Angeles, which would end in July in Prague. It is one of Netflix’s most costly movies, with a $200 million production budget.
On July 15, 2022, The Gray Man began a constrained theater run; on July 22, it was made available digitally on Netflix. While the ensemble cast won accolades, the “clichéd storyline and rapid tempo” were criticized by critics. A spin-off and a sequel to the movie will come after it, with Ryan Gosling returning in both.
