The sports comedy-drama Nacho Libre was produced in 2006 by Mike White, Jared and Jerusha Hess, and Jared Hess. Jack Black plays the role of Ignacio, a Catholic friar and Lucha libre enthusiast who secretly works as a luchador to raise money for the orphanage where he volunteers. A real-life Mexican Catholic priest named Fray Tormenta (also known as “Friar Storm” or Rev. Sergio GutiĆ©rrez Bentez) had a 23-year career as a masked wrestler to support the orphanage he oversaw. His life is loosely based on the movie. Producing the movie was Black, White, David Klawans, and Julia Pistor.

On June 16, 2006, Paramount Pictures released the movie. In contrast to its $35 million production budget, it earned $99.3 million at the global box office and received mixed reviews from critics. Majesco Entertainment published a video game adaptation of the film, which was released for the Nintendo DS. It is a wrestling game in the style of a cartoon based on the film.

What is the message of Nacho Libre?

“Perhaps it’s time to get a better duty!” says Nacho Libre. Most people are afraid of change, but it is only through change that we can truly discover who we are. ‘Discomfort’ promotes growth, whereas ‘comfort’ dampens the desire for the soul. Tasting your desired life is a great way to enjoy it.
