Van Conner was born In Apple Valley, California, on March 17, 1967. He co-founded Screaming Trees in 1984 with his brother Gary Lee Conner, Mark Lanegan, and Mark Pickerel. On June 25, 2000, Screaming Trees made their formal dissolution public.

Conner established the understated group Gardener, which released its sole album in the 1990s under the name New Dawning Time. Conner has also made brief cameos as a session musician for a number of well-known bands, such as Queens of the Stone Age, and has collaborated with Mark Lanegan on his solo work.

Following the release of a number of noteworthy albums on SST, including “Buzz Factory” and “Invisible Lantern,” The Trees signed with the major label Epic Records in 1989.

The following year, when their song “Nearly Lost You” was included on the soundtrack of Cameron Crowe’s movie “Singles,” which helped define the Northwest scene, the group’s career really took off. They were also signed up for management by the formidable Q-Prime. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden co-produced the group’s major label debut, “Uncle Anesthesia,” which was released in 1991.
