Six months after the Omagh bombing, one of the worst acts in the conflict’s history in Northern Ireland, Murphy was taken into custody in February 1998. 29 people were murdered and more than 200 others were hurt in the bombing, which was carried out by the Real Irish Republican Army (RIRA), a rebel republican organization.

Murphy was charged with giving the bombers two cell phones, which they allegedly used to plan the attack. He was also charged with giving some of the bombers rides. Murphy was found guilty of plotting to cause an explosion in the Republic of Ireland in January 2002 and given a 14-year prison sentence by a special non-jury court in Dublin.
