Chaleo Yoovidhya introduced Krating Daeng, which means “red gaur” in Thai, in 1976. It was popular among Thai truck drivers and laborers. In 1982, Dietrich Mateschitz visited Thailand while employed for the German company Blendax, which was subsequently acquired by Procter & Gamble. While there, he met Chaleo, the proprietor of T.C. Pharmaceutical. Mateschitz learned that Krating Daeng helped him get over his jet lag when he was there. Together with Yoovidhya, Mateschitz co-founded Red Bull GmbH in 1984, growing it into a global brand. To finance the business, each partner contributed US$500,000 of savings.
Red Bull sponsored its first team, the Swiss Formula One team Sauber, in 1995, and began sponsoring the Flying Bulls, a Czech aerobatics team, in 1999. In the 2000s, the company expanded its sporting team ownership to include several soccer teams, including the Austrian Bundesliga team SV Austria Salzburg (rebranded as Red Bull Salzburg) in 2006, the Major League Soccer team the New York MetroStars (rebranded as the New York Red Bulls) in 2007, and the fifth-tier German team SSV Markranstadt (rebranded as RasenBallsport Leipzig) in 2009.
RB Leipzig has caused controversy and been the target of some fan protests, but the team has also enjoyed quick success, moving up the German soccer leagues to secure a spot in the top-flight Bundesliga and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League in 2017-2018 and 2019-2020, the latter of which resulted in a semifinal defeat to Paris St. Germain. Additionally, the organization supports the Red Bull 3X men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball competitions as well as the Los Angeles Clippers NBA team.
