Derek Carr chose Fresno State, where his brother David also played quarterback, as an early-entry freshman for the spring semester of 2009 so he could take part in spring football with the Bulldogs.

In his sophomore season, he passed for 1,246 yards and 12 touchdowns, and in his junior campaign, he completed 16 passes for 1,622 yards. The Katy High School Tigers, the eventual state winners in Class 5A Division 2 in 2007, upset Carr’s team, which had an undefeated 13-0 season (including the playoffs), in the Region 3 quarterfinals of the Class 5A Division 2 State Playoffs.

Derek Carr was heavily recruited also in his junior year. Fresno State, SMU, Boise State, the University of Southern California, UCLA, and Utah were among the colleges he considered applying to. Only Utah, SMU, and Fresno State offered Carr a scholarship out of all of these institutions. He finally verbally committed to Fresno State on May 25, 2008, at the conclusion of his junior year.
