Igor Vysotsky, won his first national championship in 1954 and went on to win the Soviet featherweight title three times. In 1956, Vysotsky represented the Soviet Union at the Melbourne Olympics, where he won the silver medal in the featherweight division.

He was also a member of the Soviet team that won the team gold medal at the 1958 European Championships. His greatest achievement came at the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he won the gold medal in the featherweight division. He defeated several top boxers on his way to the final, including the reigning Olympic champion, Sandro Lopopolo of Italy. In the final, Vysotsky defeated fellow Soviet boxer Oleg Grigoryev to win the gold medal.
