According to many online tabloids, it is the largest mass suicide to ever occur in the history of the United States.
Marshall Applewhite was born to Marshall Herff Applewhite Sr. his father who was a Presbyterian pastor and Louise Applewhite, his mother. Marshall graduated from Austin College in 1952. Then, between 1954 to 1956, he served a short time in the US army corps. American religious leader Applewhite earned his Master of Music degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1959. In 1961, he was appointed choral director at the University of Alabama.

Marshall Applewhite passed away on March 16, 1997, in Rancho Santa Fe, California. At the time of his death, he was 65 years. Information about his funeral is not known however he was cremated.
