When he was a young man, Applewhite attended a number of universities and joined the US Army. Prior to his resignation from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, in 1970, he first explored a career in education. He gave this reason: “mental upheaval.” Following his father’s passing, he experienced extreme depression.
In 1972, Bonnie Nettles, a nurse, and Applewhite grew close. They talked extensively about mysticism and came to the conclusion that they were divine messengers. After a brief period of running a bookshop and educational facility, they started traveling the country in 1973 to share their ideas. Only one convert was won over. In 1975, Applewhite was imprisoned for six months after being charged with failing to return a rental automobile. He refined his theology more while incarcerated.
