In November 1975, Vysotsky had won 98 amateur fights against just 13 losses, which indicate that his greatest years were in the mid-1970s.
At that point, he claimed that all of his defeats had come at the hands of other Soviet boxers. Strangely enough, Yevgeniy Gorstkov was listed as the top heavyweight boxer in the USSR by the Soviet boxing authorities in 1975, despite the fact that Vysotsky had already faced Gorstkov once and defeated him on cuts.
However, at the time, Vysotsky was the top-ranked amateur heavyweight boxer in the world, and he was recognized by AIBA, and widely publicized by the Western press. Gorstkov said that his triumph with Vysotsky was as a result of pure luck. He said in his words; “Anybody can win any given fight.”
