Mize spent his formative years operating the scoreboard on the third hole at the Master’s Tournament. He went to Georgia Tech, and in 1980 he started working professionally.

Mize had a fruitful career, being in the top 125 in terms of earnings for 20 seasons between 1982 and 2001. He won the 1983 Danny Thomas Memphis Classic, his first PGA Tour victory, and went on to win two more times on the circuit.

Mize is best known for his victory in the 1987 Masters Tournament, where he beat Seve Ballesteros and Greg Norman in a playoff by chipping in from off the green on the eleventh hole.

Mize also participated in international competition, taking home four victories while representing the United States in the Ryder Cup in 1987 and the Dunhill Cup in 2000.
