Constantine Alexander Payne, an American director, screenwriter, and producer, was born on February 10, 1961. He is best known for the movies Nebraska (2013), Downsizing, About Schmidt, The Descendants, Election (1999), Citizen Ruth (1996), and Downsizing (2017). He is renowned for his sarcastic portrayals of modern American society and black humour. Payne has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director three times, and he has won the award twice for Best Adapted Screenplay. Payne was named number two on Metacritic’s ranking of the top 25 twenty-first century filmmakers in 2017.
Payne was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to restaurant proprietors Peggy and George Payne. He was up in the Dundee neighbourhood and is the youngest of three sons. He is descended from the Greeks. Nicholas “Nick” Payne, Payne’s paternal grandpa, anglicized the last name from “Papadopoulos.” His ancestors hail from the Greek islands of Syros, Livadia, and Aegio.
Payne describes his childhood as a product of his family’s integration into Omaha’s community. His grandparents started the Virginia Cafe, and Payne’s father took over running the eatery. As a youngster, Payne frequently visited there. In 1969, there was a fire that destroyed the restaurant; afterwards, the W. Dale Clark Library was constructed there.
