Her art is usually feminized and influenced by folk themes from Portugal. Rego was born on January 26, 1935, in Lisbon, Portugal.

Rego’s father was an anti-fascist electrical engineer who worked for the Marconi Company.

Her mother, a talented artist and traditional Portuguese woman, did not inspire her daughter to pursue a career, despite the fact that she began drawing at the age of four.

Paula Rego studied at University College London’s Slade School of Fine Art and was a member of the London Group’s exhibiting members, with David Hockney and Frank Auerbach.
