Paula Rego was born in Lisbon, Portugal on January 26, 1935. Her father was an anti-fascist electrical engineer who worked for the Marconi Company.

Her mother was a competent artist, but as a traditional Portuguese woman, she did not encourage her daughter to pursue a career, despite the fact that she began drawing at the age of four.

Her father was posted to work in the United Kingdom in 1936, dividing the family.

Rego’s parents abandoned her in Portugal, leaving her in the care of her grandmother until 1939.

Rego’s grandmother was to become an important figure in her life, as she learned many of the traditional folktales that would one day make their way into her artwork from her grandmother and the family maid.

Rego was born into a family of Anglophiles, and she was sent to the only English-language school in Lisbon’s district at the time, Saint Julian’s School in Carcavelos, where she studied from 1945 to 1951.
