Betty’s mother, described as a “accomplished mezzo-soprano,” taught her to sing when Betty was five years old and enrolled her in the Kansas City Conservatory of Music. Her parents had separated and divorced before April 1930, according to federal census records. Their marriage is said to have been turbulent, with allegations that her father once threatened to shoot her mother in the abdomen while Betty was pregnant, and that after Betty’s birth, he made additional threats that forced her mother to hide in a locked closet to protect herself and her baby on one occasion.
Betty had little personal contact with her father after her mother’s divorce from Dailey. Betty moved to Kansas City with her mother to live with her mother’s parents, Josie and George Andrew Lynn. Betty’s grandfather, a railroad engineer, effectively served as her father figure until his death in 1959 in Sacramento, California.
