Cissy Houston is a gospel and soul singer from the United States. Houston launched a solo career after singing backup for Roy Hamilton, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Presley, and Aretha Franklin. She won two Grammy Awards for her efforts.

Houston is the mother of Whitney Houston, the aunt of Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and the cousin of opera singer Leontyne Price.

Cissy relocated to the home of her older sister Lee and her husband Mancel Warrick. Mancel Warrick Jr., Marie Dionne Warrick, and Delia Juanita (Dee Dee) Warrick were the Warricks’ three children. Leontyne Price, a soprano, is a Drinkard cousin.

Houston graduated from South Side High School. Houston is a Christian who claims to have “found Christ” at the age of 14. Houston has directed the New Hope Baptist Church’s 200-member Youth Inspirational Choir for almost fifty years. She is a main influence behind and performs at the McDonald’s Gospelfest every year.
