James Altman is a Catholic priest who gained fame after appearing in a popular YouTube video in 2020. Altman was barred from publicly celebrating Mass in 2021 after a disagreement with Bishop William P. Callahan on his views.
Altman was ordained as a Catholic priest in 2008, after working as an attorney before to entering a Catholic seminary. From 2010 to 2017, he was assigned to St. Peter and Paul Parish in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, before being relocated to St. James the Less Parish in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
While assigned at St. Peter and Paul, cemetery upkeep declined throughout his tenure, and the cemetery quickly became in debt.
However, a cemetery employee indicated that she did not believe Altman was to blame for the financial problems.
