Shakur is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide. Much of Shakur’s music has been praised for tackling contemporary socioeconomic issues that affected inner communities, and he is seen as a symbol of anti-inequality activism.
Shakur was born in New York City to political activists and members of the Black Panther Party. He was raised in Baltimore by his mother, Afeni Shakur, then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988.
He rose to prominence in West Coast hip hop after the publication of his debut album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991, thanks to his conscious rap lyrics.
