Before quitting his group in 2014, he was a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band Exo and its subgroup Exo-M under the management of SM Entertainment.
In Mainland China, Wu was busy as a solo musician and actor. He appeared in a number of top-grossing movies, including Mr. Six and Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back, two of the highest-grossing Chinese movies ever made there. He appeared in XXX: Return of Xander Cage, which was his Hollywood debut.
Kris Wu was taken into custody by Beijing police on July 31, 2021, as a result of several rape claims that surfaced on Chinese social media.
His arrest on rape suspicion was authorized by the People’s Procuratorate of Beijing’s Chaoyang District in August 2021. Wu was given a total sentence of 13 years in prison by a Beijing court on November 25, 2022, to be followed by expulsion from China. It was reported in February 2023 that Wu had requested a new trial after locating a witness to testify against Du.
