Pierluigi Collina was regarded as the best referee of his generation by both players and fans alike for his no-nonsense approach to officiating. Pierluigi is instantly recognizable because he contracted a severe form of alopecia, resulting in the permanent loss of all his hair and earning him the nickname Kojak. This happened around the same time he started refereeing more high-profile matches in the Italian Serie A League (about 1988).

Pierluigi grew up in Bologne and earned a degree in economics from the University of Bologne in 1984. Pierluigi was a central defender for a local team during his adolescence but was persuaded to take a referee’s course in 1977, where it was discovered that he had a special aptitude for the job. Given his natural ability as a referee, he rose quickly through the ranks, and within three years he was officiating in top-flight football. All while serving his mandatory military service.
