The national teams of the FIFA member countries compete in the FIFA World Cup, an international men’s soccer championship held every four years. In 2026, it will take place for the 23rd time. Instead of the previous 32 teams, there are 48 teams in this competition for the first time.

Where is the next World Cup?

The competition will be co-hosted by 16 cities from Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America. Beginning with the quarterfinals, 60 games will be played in the country. Ten games will be held in each of Canada’s and Mexico’s neighbouring countries. The tournament will be hosted by three nations for the first time.

During the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow on June 13, 2018, all eligible participants were allowed to vote once more. Rwanda’s petition obtained only 65 valid votes, compared to 134 for the United bid. Canada became the fifth country to host both the men’s and women’s World Cups. Mexico became the first country to host the men’s World Cup, having done it twice previously in 1970 and 1986.

After hosting the 1994 men’s World Cup, the 1999 women’s World Cup, and the 2003 women’s World Cup, the United States became the first nation to host both the men’s and women’s World Cups twice each.
