Stewart became well-known as a stand-up comic. In 1987, he started his career as a performer in New York City, and by 1989, he was a writer for Caroline’s Comedy Hour. Stewart’s first job with the network that would eventually catapult him into popularity was co-hosting the Comedy Central program Short Attention Span Theater with Patty Rosborough a year later.

Stewart presented his debut MTV program, You Wrote It, You Watch It, in 1992, but it only lasted for one brief season.

Stewart claims that it wasn’t until he made an appearance on Late Night With David Letterman that his career really took off. Stewart recounted to New York Magazine in 1994, “When I walked onstage, I blanked.” “There is barely any red light in the otherwise black theater. You would then understand that if you didn’t speak, it would be really quiet.”
