Kerin held a number of important ministerial positions during the Hawke and Keating administrations, including the longest-serving position in Australian history as Minister for Primary Industries and Energy for eight years, and Treasurer for six months.

John Kerin quit the Labor Party’s New South Wales chapter in 2011 because he didn’t like how the organization was becoming more and more centralized. He claimed that because the party’s administrative wing had started to become more involved, there was little chance for actual policymaking participation among party members at the rank and file.
