Running back and linebacker were two of Chenal’s sports positions while he was a student at Grantsburg High School. As a senior, Chenal racked up 2,038 rushing yards, 42 touchdowns, and 226 receiving yards. On defence, he made 120 tackles, including seven for losses.

Chenal was chosen by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association as the Gatorade Football Player of the Year for the state as well as the small-school Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year. Chenal made an early commitment to the Wisconsin Badgers.

In his first season, Chenal participated in 11 games and recorded 20 tackles, including two tackles for a loss and one sack. During the 2020 Wisconsin COVID-19 season, he had 46 tackles, six tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, one forced fumble, one interception, and other numbers in seven games, earning him honourable mention All-Big Ten Conference honours as a sophomore.

As a junior, Chenal was selected for the Big Ten first team and was named the Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year.
