Ten Hag then took over as the club’s head coach and was appointed Utrecht’s sports director in the summer of 2015. He was appointed Ajax’s head coach in December of 2017 and led his team to the 2018–19 UEFA Champions League semifinals in 2019, which had not happened for the club since 1997.
