Lionel Edmund Rose was an Australian bantamweight boxer. He was the first Indigenous Australian to win a world title. He later became the first Indigenous Australian to be named Australian of the Year.
The boxing legend picked up boxing skills from his father who was a skilled fighter. When he was at the age of 15, Lionel fought his first amateur fight. When he was 19, he won the world bantamweight title with a 15-round decision over Masahiko who was the ‘Fighting’ Harada of Japan.
Lionel later retired from professional boxing in the year 1976. He retired with a career record of 42 wins of which 12 were a knockout, and had 11 losses. He was the first Aboriginal to be named ‘Australian of the Year’ for his outstanding achievement in boxing at the time.
