Lester Ellis was born in Blackpool, England on March 15, 1965, to Sheila Ellis and Keith Ellis Snr.

Keith Ellis is the oldest of three boys, and Neil Ellis is the youngest. Ellis was three years old when his family relocated to Australia on October 2, 1968. At the age of five, Ellis’ mother Sheila moved out of the house, leaving the three boys to live with Keith Sr. Ellis took this very personally, and as a result, he developed an aversion to authority figures and frequently skipped school.

Ellis began boxing training at the age of 12 at the Glengala Boxing Club in the Melbourne suburb of West Sunshine. Quinn recognized great potential in the young, enraged Ellis and taught him how to channel his rage through boxing.

He has five world titles, as well as Australian and Commonwealth (twice) titles. In 1985, at the age of 19, Ellis faced off against Hwan-Kil Yuh, the reigning IBF super featherweight champion, and won after fifteen rounds. In 1993, he defeated Rocky Berg to win the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) welterweight title. Ellis challenged and beat Al Coquilla for the vacant IBO light welterweight title in 1994. Ellis later went on to triumph in two additional weight class-specific IBO world championships. In 1995, he fought at lightweight against Amado Cabato, and again at light middleweight against Eric Alexander.
