Smash Mouth’s lead vocalist, Steve Harwell, has died at the age of 56.

The management of the band had earlier stated that Harwell was receiving end-of-life care at home and was suffering from liver failure.

Harwell passed away “surrounded by family and friends” at his Idaho home, according to a statement by Robert Hayes.

With songs like All-Star, Walkin’ on the Sun, and I’m a Believer, Smash Mouth enjoyed a run of successes in the 1990s and 2000s.

Who is Esther Campbell?

Esther Campbell, Harwell’s ex-fiancée, issued a restraining order against the musician in May 2020 after alleging that he had verbally and psychologically assaulted her.

She attributed the alleged behaviour to his battles with substance misuse.

In court papers, Harwell is accused of stealing and damaging Campbell’s phone.

In addition, Campbell said that he took her car keys so that she could keep the windows open in the rain.

Per the outlet, the documents also said that she described Harwell as “vindictive, angry, vile and mean.”

She asserted that Harwell’s management had advised her against requesting a protective order because he has “means” and might complicate her life.

In addition, Campbell alleged that he threatened to leave her with the bill knowing she couldn’t pay it and requested $7,000 worth of improvements on her property with the intention of moving in. The documents state that she said she won’t permit him to move in because of his alleged threats.

Campbell asked Harwell not to call, text, or message her and to avoid going near her house and place of employment. She also wished for the judge to mandate that Steve go to AA or rehab.

After dating for more than a year, they got engaged in 2019, and the intention was for him to move in. She asserted that his drinking had become excessive. She allegedly reported him to police when he started tormenting her with abusive texts and calls, something he had never done before. She made the decision to apply for a restraining order and said that their engagement was on hold because she wanted Steve to receive assistance.

There is little public information on Campbell’s personal life.
