Javonte Myers, a 28-year-old man, was found dead on the floor of his Tarrant County Jail cell for six hours in 2020, and a jailer charged with fabricating records in the case told an investigator that his management encouraged workers to lie about checking on inmates on a frequent basis.
The family of Javonte Myers has sued the Tarrant County Jail and two of its staffers in federal court for wrongful death.
On June 19, 2020, Myers died of an untreated seizure illness.
He was one of three detainees who died that week.
According to data obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, roughly two months before Myers died, jail employees missed three of their checks on another inmate, leaving him alone for about an hour.
He committed suicide. In the summer of 2020, the jail lost its state certification for six days.
