He is a Republican who has established himself as one of former President Donald Trump’s most significant legislative allies and has been identified as a follower of far-right politics.
Who is Mike Gaetz?
Gaetz was reared in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and is the son of renowned Florida politician Don Gaetz.
He spent a brief time practicing law after completing his education at William & Mary before deciding to run for state representative.
He served as a congressman in the Florida House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016. He gained global recognition for supporting Florida’s polarizing “stand-your-ground” statute following the 2012 death of Trayvon Martin.
He was originally chosen to serve in the US House of Representatives in 2016 and was later re-elected in 2018 and 2020.
Gaetz was charged with violating federal sex trafficking statutes by having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl.
Gaetz denied the charges, and the Department of Justice opened an investigation into the case in late 2020. In April 2021, the House Ethics Committee also declared an investigation.
