The United States Football League, also known as the USFL, might bring to mind thoughts of a failed professional football league from the 1980s, but a new USFL is heading to the field. Unaffiliated with the former USFL that played from 1983 to 1985, the new USFL is under the control of Fox Sports.

For many decades after its inception, American football was widely regarded as a second-tier sport behind baseball which was long-regarded as America’s national pastime. As a result, the elite levels of American football lacked the financial wherewithal to consistently finance their facilities and instead played primarily in ballparks hastily re-purposed for football.

The USFL is under the ownership of Fox Sports.FOX Sports has taken a gamble but is a large company that can sustain certain losses if they make money back on broadcasts and advertising. And if the new USFL fails, there is always a new league ready to pop up and seek a television partner.

Fox plans to invest up to $200 million into the USFL and attract around $250 million from investors. The league draws revenue of less than $10 million, so Fox’s cash input will prove essential in keeping it running.
