De’mari Jackson was a 16-year-old Fort Myers High School student and a football player based in Florida. He was a ninth-grader, and his former school coach described him as being a good kid. “He was just a ninth-grader. A neat kid. It’s a sad situation. A really tragic situation. He was a good kid. A police report from Fort Myers, Fla. said they had a call from an unnamed woman who reported a fight between two girls aged 18 and 14 and that the caller was the mother of the 14-year-old.

The report added that they also had calls to the effect that there was a victim in the case. The police indicated that when they got to the scene, they saw a boy lying on Willard Street who was later identified as De’mari Jackson. Other reports had it that Jackson had pushed a girl away from being hit by the bullet and had rather received it himself.

An administrative Pastor at Rock Church of Fort Myers by name Wayne Sloss, is quoted to have said “Obviously felt a pull of God upon his heart and on his life, and he felt that he needed to make that change that he needed to get right with God,” He added that he died a hero just hours after his baptism, “It shocks you when you first heard about it, it saddens you. Because you realize the scripture is so true when it says that today is the day of salvation.”
