William Mintram served as a fireman (stoker) on the RMS Titanic, which was from March 1866 until it collided with an iceberg on April 14, 1912. After he was being released from prison for killing his wife, he started working for White Star Line.
Mintram’s marriage wasn’t a joyful one. After arguing with his wife over how she had pawned their son’s boots to pay for drinks on the evening of October 18, 1902, he stabbed her in the back, which she died shortly after.
The next month, Mintram was charged with intentional murder and appeared at Winchester Assizes. He testified in his own defense, claiming that he had been drinking when his wife charged at him but that he did not recall anything else.
About 30 minutes prior to the incident, a police officer testified that he overheard an argument in the home and had to clear a mob of people from the street. His employers reported that Mintram had a sterling reputation. The judge sentenced him to 12 years of incarceration after the jury found him guilty of manslaughter.
