Hamlin was recruited by numerous top college football programs after graduating from Central Catholic, he was regarded as one of the top cornerbacks. He enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh to play college football for the Pittsburgh Panthers.
He participated in three games as a freshman before getting injured and sitting out. In nine games as a redshirt freshman, he made 41 tackles and had one interception.
As a redshirt sophomore, Hamlin led the Panthers with 76 tackles and two interceptions, earning honourable mention All-Atlantic Coast Conference recognition (ACC).

Damar Hamlin collapsed because he had a cardiac arrest as a result of a hit. When he was on the field, his heartbeat was revived, and he was then taken to the UC Medical Center for more evaluation and care.
