Why Did Father Bob Retire?

On September 7, 2009, Father Bob posted on his blog that he had received a request for his resignation from church officials in light of his approaching 75th birthday. According to accounts, Maguire’s response was a public statement stating that he would leave the decision of whether or not to stay to his congregation.

After holding his farewell church service at Sts. Peter and Paul’s Church in South Melbourne on January 29, 2012, Maguire was ultimately forced to retire at the age of 77. The 2013 feature-length documentary In Bob We Trust focused on the life of Maguire, who was forced into retirement. Lynn-Maree Milburn directed the documentary.
