Ada Foah in the Greater Accra Region is where Atsu was born. Atsu completed a portion of his education at the West African Football Academy, originally the Feyenoord Football Academy, in Gomoa Fetteh, in the Central Region of Ghana.

The academy is located in Sogakope, in the Volta Region of Ghana. Atsu afterward moved to Kasoa to play for the Cheetah FC side.

Atsu agreed to a five-year deal worth an estimated £3.5 million with Chelsea on September 1. Nevertheless, he was immediately loaned to Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem for the remainder of the 2013–14 season.

On October 6, 2013, Atsu made his debut as a late replacement for Kazaishvili against Feyenoord. Atsu helped Mike Havenaar later, but it was not enough to prevent Vitesse from dropping the game 2-1.
