This year in 2022, the annual ceremony Thanksgiving 2022 falls on November 24. Thanksgiving Day is a federally recognized holiday in the United States. One of the earliest Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies is thought to have originated in 1621 when Wampanoag and Plymouth colonists enjoyed a harvest feast in the fall. According to history, Thanksgiving was observed by many colonies and states for more than 200 years. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln declared a day of national Thanksgiving to be observed every November.
The Thanksgiving holiday’s history in North America is rooted in English traditions dating from the Protestant Reformation.

Why is Thanksgiving so late?

Thanksgiving as celebrated by many countries is so late because future presidents followed Lincoln’s example of annually declaring the final Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving. However, after some years in 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt declared November’s fourth Thursday as Thanksgiving rather than the fifth one.
