Since George Washington’s time, Thursday has been the day and this was continually celebrated by Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation in 1863 designating the national day of Thanksgiving to be the last Thursday of November. In George’s declaration, he said “the People of the United States a day of public thanks-giving” to be held on “Thursday the 26th day of November,” 1789.
