Earl William Hebner is a retired professional wrestling referee from the United States who most recently worked for All Elite Wrestling.

He is most recognized for his stint as World Wrestling Entertainment’s senior referee from 1988 until 2005.

In 2019, Earl Hebner was interviewed by VICE for their Dark Side of the Ring documentary series.

The popular show explores some of the most unpleasant incidents in the history of professional wrestling.

However, upon learning that the production crew was Canadian, Hebner began to panic that his life may have been in danger.

The show’s creators Evan Husney and Jason Eisener claimed in a clip from Dark Side of the Ring: Confidential that Hebner honestly believed the crew was assassins in disguise.

He was clearly under the impression that they were trying to punish him for his role in the Montreal Screwjob.

But after the interview was over, Hebner relaxed and explained why he had been so apprehensive the entire time.

“Something’s not on. I said, “I don’t feel comfortable about this thing!” Honest to God, I’ve got a buddy on the police force. I started to get him down here and let him knock on the door so if a f****** bullet came through the door, you’d shoot him and not me! I really didn’t know if this was a setup or what. And, Howard? The way you started out, made it look like a setup that you were gonna kill my a**.”

Why was Earl Hebner released?

Earl Hebner continued to work as a referee for WWE until 2005, despite his dreadful reputation as a result of his role in the Montreal Screwjob.

After over two decades with the organization, he was let go.

He was fired for reportedly selling WWE products without the company’s consent on his own.

He’s worked as a referee in a variety of other wrestling promotions since then.

He worked with TNA, which is now known as IMPACT Wrestling, for a long time.

Hebner is still remembered as one of the most well-known referees in wrestling history.

He oversaw countless iconic matches throughout the Attitude Era, in addition to his role with the Montreal Screwjob.
