While a student in Chattanooga, William M. Barker joined the Delta Theta chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

Barker received his Juris Doctor from the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1967. In 2006, Barker was honored by his fraternity as a “Significant Sig” and awarded “Distinguished Alumnus” medals by both his law school and his undergraduate institution.
