He was a physical training instructor who also played baseball for the Fort Eustis team. During Willie’s two years in the army, the Giants failed to win the National League pennant. Willie returned to the Giants in 1954, and they won the World Series. Willie made a spectacular, iconic over-the-shoulder catch to help the Giants win the first game. The catch is widely regarded as one of the greatest in baseball history.

Willie retired from baseball in 1973. Willie was a Mets batting coach and worked in public relations for Bally’s Resorts and Colgate-Palmolive.
